The Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) program is pleased to announce its 2018 Teacher of the Year Runner-Up is Linda Massie, Mt. Erie Elementary School, in Wayne County, Illinois.
Linda Massie involves agriculture in her classroom through creative curricular themes including apples, nutrition, and seed biology. A favorite activity of her first-grade classroom is exploring pizza from the crust up! Students use both fiction and non-fiction reading as well as hand-on activities to gain an understanding of their food systems. Massie shares and promotes agriculture literacy to her peers and colleagues by presenting on the subject at workshops and conferences, and she has been an avid participant in 8 intensive Summer Agricultural Institutes to gain more knowledge to readily infuse into her classroom.
“Linda has made Wayne County AITC lessons a part of her classroom for many years. She has used agriculture to teach her students lessons in math, science, and art. We are very proud of Linda’s accomplishment, and are grateful to be her partner in teaching agriculture,” commented Doug Anderson, Manager of the Wayne County Farm Bureau.
Linda will be presented her award during the Awards Ceremony at the Illinois Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in Chicago on December 2.
