Agriculture in the Classroom
The Wayne County Ag in the Classroom program has a focus on agricultural education for grades K-12, mainly focusing on students in 3rd-5th grades.
The goal of the Ag in the Classroom program is to teach children what agriculture is, where their food and fibers come from, and how it affects their lives everyday. We want kids to know that agriculture can be integrated with math, science, social studies, etc. If we can teach students and influence them at an early age, they will grow into adults who appreciate the importance of the agriculture industry in their community.
One of the top priorities of Wayne County Ag in the Classroom (AITC) is to provide a comprehensive program to every fourth grader in the county. Ideally, the program consists of a minimum of four different lessons from the AITC coordinator. The students learn about a different agricultural topic with each visit. During each lesson the children enjoy hands-on activities, science experiments, fun trivia, reading activities and more. They also receive an Ag Mag relating to the lesson. The majority of the funding for this program is through grants, donations, fundraisers, and matching funds from the Wayne County Farm Bureau.
